Arunhati Roy’s Views on Divorce – and Her New Book!

Arundhati Roy’s on divorce “It’s Not A Bad Thing.”

Award-winning book author Arundhati Roy is one of the most celebrated fiction writers in the world. Although just as good when it comes to writing non-fiction, she draws how she differentiates the two.“Fiction is more relaxed, everything in the universe has to be taken into consideration, which can be seen in The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. Writing non-fiction is about a deadline, an injustice that has to be told from another viewpoint. Non- fiction is usually about an urgent matter that has to be straightened out before it’s too late. However, her love for writing non-fiction stems from personal experience. Speaking on the subject of divorce to IANS in an interview, The God of Small Things writer feels divorce may be a good thing.

Divorce may be good

Arundhati Roy’s parents divorced when she was a tender age of two. As a young child, cruelties of the world such as the caste segregation system were introduced while growing up in Kerala. As a single mother, Arundhati never met her father. “The void was visible; however my mother was very wonderful but strict.” This brings into the focus many marriages that stand the test of time, even under unhealthy situations. With parents modeling that two parents are essential to raising a child, Arundhati Roy’s views on divorce destroys that myth. This comes about as children will seek to emulate those unhealthy relationships once they reach adulthood. Instead of happy, healthy relationships, the children offer sadness, control, and overall unhealthy relationships.

Also with more parents seeking to shield children from divorce, a hostile environment that would have been avoided just if the parents divorced is created. In the end, children take responsibility, feeling it is their fault.

Growth and Independence

“In India, there is a lot of violence; it needs to stop,” time and again Arundhati can be heard saying in her most recent interviews. Looking further at Arundhati Roy’s views on divorce, these freedoms of speech can be traced back to her mother’s independence. “With divorce, there is room for growth, and my mother became a wonderful person. If she had decided to suffer for the sake of the family, she would have transmitted the suffering“. With scientists backing this theory, the reality is that divorce from a partner to end the suffering enables growth. A mutual effort is needed in marriage to ensure that both partners grow in friendship. However, if it is not working, divorce is the best decision for both to attain growth. With Arundhati experience, divorce enabled her mother to become a woman of character, making her strong enough to raise her children towards their independence, each seeking their happiness.

Arundhati Roy’s views on divorce also bring out the point; a happily divorced parent verses a bitterly divorced parent is a better parent overall. The sanity of the parent is guaranteed; meaning sanity of all around is also attained with only that one step of courage.

The dark side of divorce

“Many think that divorce is terrible, it’s a tragedy, but I don’t see it that way” Arundhati Roy continues. “It wasn’t easy at all, but all in all, it wasn’t a tragedy” she continues. In this matter, she states “my mother was very strict, and I left home very early, I do go back once in a while though” with this, she points out that divorce and the responsibility of divorce may cause one to become unbearable. One may fall victim to their pain and become cold to others, transferring the pain. However, this statement also means it’s clear that divorce needs courage, courage to get
past the loneliness and embrace the solitude. In the end, one’s energy can be devoted to more important things such as personal growth and children happiness.

Rise to masterpieces

Considering that all the experiences in addition to her personal experienced as a married and a divorced woman. Arundhati Roy’s views on divorce helped shape the narrative of The God of Small Things. The narrative centers on a broken heart getting the courage to stand up again. Taking many years to take shape before it got first to read, personal experience took center stage to make it an award-winning masterpiece. The God of Small Things was Arundhati first novel. However, in between it and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, there are several other non-fiction books worth the read. One such book is The End of Imagination. Centering on India’s nuclear test in May 1998, its motivation was urgent to address the safety of humanity.

Personal life effects

Arundhati Roy’s views on divorce have also affected her personal life. Married twice and divorced once, she did not waste time in a relationship without a future and growth, leading her to find the opportunity to get the right partner. As a political activist and an environmentalist, courage is something that Arundhati has mastered in doing for those without a voice. Speaking of life, “I’m older and have seen a lot. In the last 20 years, many things have changed even as a writer. The world universe of writers has also evolved with the evolution of technology. “Finishing up she said “the world may have evolved in never seen speeds but it is much more connected. This will be clear in the next novel “ With Her latest novel exploring the world of fiction during what seems to be a challenging time, and one can only expect to find the next read in the Booker award shortlist.

The future

Arundhati Roy’s return to fiction after a decade is the most significant event to occur in the literary world. Leaving Arundhati Roy’s views on divorce behind she states “I don’t limit myself to time. I strive to live with the characters for a long time.” Speaking on other writers “The world is full of different writers some write fast and do it brilliantly, as for me the universe is layered and personally getting along with the characters is vital.” However with non- fiction pieces drawn from everyday life, fans expect her voice not only to be heard on matters to do with family and environment but on the political arena as well.
